Who We Serve
Member Tribes
Tribal Energy Champions Across The Midwest
MTERA Member Tribes currently represent 33 of the 35 Tribal Nations across Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. While our membership encompasses the majority of Tribes in the region, all Midwest Tribes are welcome to access our renewable energy programs and resources regardless of membership status.
Membership in MTERA signifies a Tribe’s formal commitment to advancing energy sovereignty, sustainability, and clean energy development in Tribal communities. Each Member Tribe has passed a Tribal Council resolution affirming their dedication to MTERA’s mission of supporting Tribal energy independence.

Our Governance Structure
MTERA is governed by dedicated Tribal Energy Champions (TECs) who are officially appointed by their respective Tribal Councils. These representatives:
- Participate in monthly board meetings to guide MTERA’s strategic direction
- Engage in bi-annual individual consultations to address specific Tribal energy needs
- Ensure effective deployment of MTERA resources within their communities
- Advocate for renewable energy initiatives that respect Tribal sovereignty
As a MTERA Member Tribe, you commit to:
- Submitting a Tribal Council resolution asserting your Tribe’s commitment to MTERA’s mission
- Appointing Tribal representative to serve as your MTERA Board Member
- Active engagement in advancing clean energy solutions for Tribal communities
